Find a New Home for Your Pet

Rehome Your Pet

Rehoming your pet is one of the most difficult decisions a pet owner can make. We understand that unexpected life changes can make it hard or impossible to care for your pet, and we're here to help.

Below, you'll find information about requesting rehoming support through HSSW and other resources that can help you rehome your pet without bringing them to the shelter.

Reduced-Stress Rehoming Services

Rehome on Your Own

Rehoming your pet through a third-party service empowers you to find the best home possible for your pet. And when you rehome your pet yourself - instead of taking them to the shelter - you help ensure shelter resources are reserved for pets who have no one to care for them.

Review the information below to get started.

Rehome by Adopt a Pet

Rehome by Adopt a Pet helps pet owners find the best possible home and family for their pet. Adopt a Pet is a free pet adoption site, partnering with 15,000 shelters and rescues across the U.S. and Canada.

A small fee (between $5 and $50) is required to list a pet. If this is cost prohibitive, you may use a referral coupon code that takes 90% off the listing fee: HSSW13308

Home to Home

Home To Home is an online pet placement platform that helps pet owners find new homes (permanent or temporary) for their pets. Home To Home believes pets that need a new home do best if they can be transitioned directly from their current home to a new, loving home and avoid the stress of a stay at an animal shelter.

Appointments required

Rehoming Through the Shelter

With record numbers of pets in our shelter, appointments are required to rehome your pet at HSSW. Appointments help ensure we're able to best meet the needs of pets and people in our community.

Before you Make an Appointment

Please register your pet with one or more of the rehoming services above. Shelters are stressful places for animals and when you can rehome on your own, you reduce the stress on your pet and help ensure shelter resources are dedicated to the pets in greatest need.

Make an Appointment

If you were unable to rehome your pet on your own, contact the campus nearest you to make an appointment. Our team will review your request and make recommendations about your pet's placement.

Releasing Your Pet to HSSW

If your pet is approved to be released into our care, you will receive a link to share more details about your pet's lifestyle, personality, and behavior. The information helps us provide the best support possible for your pet.

Please review the information below for more important information about what to expect in the rehoming process.

The average daily cost we incur to house and care for each animal we receive is $150. We do not charge a set fee to admit pets for rehoming, so to offset the daily cost of care, we request that the family rehoming a pet donate what they can comfortably afford.

Please ensure your pet has updated vaccination records from their vet. Any history you can provide is helpful.

If your animal is coming from out of state, they must be accompanied by a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection and proof of current Rabies vaccination. Washington State law prohibits us from accepting animals without this documentation.

When you release your pet, you give HSSW all legal ownership rights to the animal. We take your pet's health and well-being seriously and our team will provide the best care possible while they are with us.
